Treasures in Brass

SPARKS AND VASCO WALKED cautiously into the barn, careful not to disturb the livestock resting inside the barn. The softcover of hay gave each soft step a slight crackle to it. The two boys made their beds on the upper floor of the barn. The rolls Vasco had brought were ragged, torn, and worn down

Sparks settled atop one of them, dropping his tool bag into his lap. Looking intently under the various spark plugs, screwdrivers and spanners tossed carelessly into it before he found the large cigar box he had swiped from his Uncle’s room.

Vasco got up on his elbow, glancing over the sizable oak box.

“Whatcha got there, Sparks?” The older boy grinned, fully expecting the fine Havann cigars that were advertised on the box.

Sparks threw the box open and tugged out not a fine roll of tobacco but an old, well-maintained revolver.

Vasco stared at it for a long while, mouth agape, ready to ask Sparks where he had bought it before he finally noticed the large, stylized D engraved on the weapon’s grip. “Sparks, is that why Dawsons were so keen on beating on you?” The older boy sat up from his bedroll fully, trying to better look at the Big Iron. A silence passed before Sparks answered slowly, “I just picked it up off the ground. How was I supposed to know that’s what they wanted!” Sparks spoke the half-truth, not mentioning it was him who knocked it out of the mare’s saddlebags minutes after the elder Dawson had walked into the saloon early that morning.

“Then, if it was just a misunderstanding, why didn’t you just give it back?!”

“You really think they weren’t just going to blow me away the moment I did?”

Vasco fell silent, shifting his weight from side to side. His face contorted, trying to come up with a good argument.

Sparks stared at the weapon for a long while, inspecting the rounds in the chamber. Pulling out the one that had failed to fire last night. Turning it over in his hand again and again.

“Alright, fine... but it’s just a gun. Ain’t no reason for them to almost send you Beyond the Sunsets for that....” Vasco still sounded confused, watching Sparks dig in his bag for a pair of pliers. The young black thumb had to know why the first shot didn’t finish the deed. With less resistance than expected, the back of the bullet came off. Revealing a hollow, powder-less interior. Sparks gave it a shake before he saw something glimmering inside. Titling the shell into his palm, a small rounded hard object rolled out. It took a moment for what it was to settle into both boys. Its color shifted from a pale baby blue to a startlingly bright green as it teetered in Spark’s palm.

The Ulmiran Diamond resting in his hand was flawless to the naked eye.

“Holy Saint’s Powder Sparks, that’s... that can’t be.” Vasco was stunned into silence, words having fled him. Sparks tilted the bullet again, and a second and then finally a third dropped into his palm.
